Surgical Extractions

Unfortunately, it isn’t always possible to save a tooth. Sometimes, it may be in your best interest to have a tooth removed. There are several reasons why this may be necessary, including if your teeth are severely decayed, if your teeth are too crowded, if you have a broken tooth your dentist cannot repair or if you have an impacted wisdom tooth. Your dentist will discuss your options with you and advise on the most suitable course of action. Surgical extractions will always be a last resort.
Before beginning the extraction, your dentist will inject a local anaesthetic into the area surrounding the tooth waiting to be removed. Once this has taken effect, they will widen your tooth socket and gently extract the tooth. Once the tooth has been successfully removed, your dentist will give you a piece of soft padding to stem any bleeding from the hole. They will then advise you on any necessary aftercare instructions.

WILL IT BE PAINFUL?

With the advanced technology we have to hand nowadays, your surgical extraction will not be anywhere near as painful as you might expect. You will be supplied with a local anaesthetic, which will numb any pain you may otherwise have experienced. If you are feeling particularly anxious about the procedure, speak with your dentist about the possibility of sedation, which will put you in a sleepy state, relaxing you and relieving you of any pain.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

Depending on your situation, it may benefit you to take antibiotics after your extraction. In order to prevent any infections in the area of the removed tooth, we recommend refraining from smoking and only drinking through straws as your mouth heals. If you experience any swelling in the area, we suggest applying a cold compress to your cheek to reduce inflammation.

WHY ARE MY WISDOM TEETH PAINFUL?

Impacted wisdom teeth are, unfortunately, fairly common for adults. If you have noticed any discomfort, pain, swelling or infection in your teeth or gums, one of your wisdom teeth may have become impacted.
This means that one of your wisdom teeth is growing into one of your other teeth, pressing on it and creating intense pressure and pain that spreads throughout the mouth. Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to form in your mouth. Whilst they generally don’t cause problems, they can become impacted if your mouth matures too quickly.
Impacted wisdom teeth can be incredibly uncomfortable to live with and could cause further dental issues down the line if not removed. If you think you might be suffering from an impacted wisdom tooth, please don’t delay booking an appointment with East Grinstead Smiles today. Our expert team will do everything they can to solve your problem for you.
