Crowns and Bridges
Crowns and bridges are an effective method of restoring lost teeth or fixing damaged teeth. They are permanent fixtures that only a dentist can remove, as they are cemented onto your natural teeth or implants.
Crowns
Crowns can be used for various reasons, including strengthening and repairing a damaged tooth, improving its appearance and protecting weak teeth from fracturing. They are also used to attach a bridge. Here at East Grinstead Smiles, we offer porcelain crowns, which are more modern than traditional metal crowns. Porcelain crowns are customised to match the shade of your teeth, making them an inconspicuous fix to your dental issues. In contrast, traditional metal crowns are not so subtle, which is why porcelain crowns are generally considered preferable.
Bridges
Bridges are replacement teeth, ideal for filling in gaps left by one or more missing teeth. This is not only necessary for cosmetic reasons; it is not uncommon for teeth to shift into the gaps left by missing teeth, which can ultimately result in a misaligned bite. Moreover, this imbalance can cause gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Your dentist will cement the bridge onto the natural teeth or implants surrounding the gap, which are named abutments. The replacement teeth will be attached to the crowns on the abutments.
WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE entail?
Before your dentist can install crowns and bridges, they must first reduce your natural teeth or implants in size so that the crown can fit over the tooth cap. Your dentist will then take an impression on your teeth so that your crown or bridge can be fitted to your exact tooth size. They will also match the shade to your existing tooth colour. Once a dental lab has made the crowns and bridges, your dentist will cement them to your teeth, fixing your smile for good.
WHY MIGHT I NEED A CROWN OR BRIDGE?
There are a few reasons why you might need a crown or bridge. If you have damaged teeth or you have teeth with large fillings, you may be better off with a dental crown to help protect the remaining tooth. A dental crown can also help to add durability for chewing. If you are missing one tooth, there is an option for a dental crown with an implant or a dental bridge.
WHAT CAN I DO TO CARE FOR MY CROWNS AND BRIDGES?
While crowns and bridges are designed to last for your lifetime, they can occasionally loosen or fall out over time. The number one thing you can do to preserve your crowns and bridges is to practise good oral hygiene. Maintaining strong teeth will ensure that your crown or bridge has adequate support, which will keep them sturdy and immovable. We also recommend being vigilant in attending your regular dental checkups, so your dentist can spot any issues with the crown or bridge before the problem worsens.
